Design and Technologies
Year two teacher resource
Design and Technologies Resource
Year Two
Will your boat float?
Content descriptors addressed in this unit:
Design and Technologies Knowledge and Understanding;
Explore how technologies use forces to create movement in products (ACTDEK002)
Relevant Elaborations:
-Exploring how to manipulate materials using a range of tools, equipment and techniques to create movement, for example when constructing a toy boat that floats or moves.
Design and Technologies Processes and Production skills;
Use materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques to safely make designed solutions (ACTDEP007)
Background Information for Teachers
The following resource has been developed to address the Foundation to Year Two ‘design and technologies curriculum.’ The aim of this resource is to assist teachers in implementing engaging and meaningful learning experiences while addressing curriculum learning outcomes. The resource includes a unit plan consisting of four forty minutes lessons in which students are given the task to plan and design a boat for the annual boat race for the schools prep class and evaluate the effectiveness of materials and the boats ability to float and move. The teaching sequences allow for differentiation and adaption to ensure all students have the ability to extend their knowledge and understanding through hands-on activities, individual planning and collaborative learning. The resource includes a learning booklet in which students can be supported through where necessary while advanced learners can extend and demonstrate their individual understanding through advanced planning, labelling of diagrams, verbal demonstration, their choice of materials and level of evaluation to meet the tasks requirements. Students will have the opportunity to think critically and creatively as they work collaboratively and evaluate a fellow student’s design by identifying positives and possible alterations which could be made to improve the design.
Australian Curriculum Connections:
This unit can be closely aligned with the Year Two Science physical science curriculum in which students are introduced to forces including push and pull as well as the ways in which materials can affect the way objects move. Students will be encouraged to use their science knowledge and understanding in order to consider a variety of factors including their size and shape (ACSSU005) and address ways they can design a boat which floats and moves due to force (ACSSU033) in order to be successful in the prep boat race.
Cross curriculum Priorities:
Throughout the unit students may also develop understanding of sustainability. Through the planning and construction of the boat students will consider how materials can influence their decisions. Students will use a variety of materials and techniques in order to develop their ideas and make the most effective decision.
General capabilities :
-Critical and Creative thinking
- Literacy
-Personal and Social capability
